Thai Garden Design recently performed a trial for a large coal power plant in Central Thailand. Several large heaps of coal dominate the view and the owners and residents are looking for ways to beatify the huge black hills. After consultation with the Thai Garden Design team, pH levels of the surface coal were established and grass types were recommended.
The team carefully scaled 10m uphill (the actual total height is around 20m) and embedded the grass in clumps in soil reservoirs dug out by hand. With enough soil, sun, water and fertilisation, there is no reason why the grass shouldn't grow successfully, in time, taking over the face of the coal pile and thus turning it 'green'.
More photos will be posted as the grass develops and grows.
