This large roof terrace garden attached to a large condo in the Central Sukhumvit area of Bangkok was in need of a complete re-think. At just over 100 SQM in size, the potential for the space was promising, but the existing garden had remained unchanged for a number of years.
Old style curving brick beds, bumpy grass and overgrown trees and shrubs were ruining the grand view of Central Bangkok. A raised concrete slab in one corner looked sad and unused.
The team got to work. A new design was produced, critiqued and amended. Several versions were created before a final plan was decided on. Once budget was set, the team began by removing the entire contents of the old garden, including all the old grass, plants, unwanted trees and bricks. Working with the condo building management, all rules and regulations were adhered to.
To replace the old garden, the team designed a bright, vibrant pebble and rock garden, with low maintenance plants to screen the main part of the balcony. A hardwood pergola was constructed on the (cleaned) slab in the corner, with a mix of crazy stone pavers and wood tile to make the surrounding garden attractive and interesting.
Finally, a sand and gravel course was compacted over the old lawn area, and an artificial lawn was laid, rolled and pinned into position. This new lawn is now a great play area for the children.
